Catania vs. Cagliari

It was already a relegation dogfight and a great chance for the Sardinians to cause an upset, as Catania were decimated. Ciro Capuano and Nicolas Federico Spolli sat out one-match bans, while Pablo Barrientos, Pablo Sebastian Alvarez, Jorge Martinez and Ezequiel Carboni were not 100 per cent fit.

Curiously, both Cagliari's wins so far this season were away from home, where they conceded one goal in four games.

Ezequiel Carboni had several early efforts charged down, while after a slow start Cagliari threatened with Alessandro Matri on the counter.

Catania took the lead with a perfectly-planned free kick move. The set play was passed in by Llama, Carboni flicked it up for Mascara's header down as Adrian Ricchiuti ran in for the volleyed finish from eight yards. It was the Argentine's debut Serie A goal at the age of 31.

However, Cagliari equalised with an even more spectacular goal. The cross came in from the right and Daniele Dessena acrobatically smashed the overhead kick into the net from the penalty spot. It was a stunner and a candidate for goal of the season.

Mascara was livid, as he wanted a penalty for a tussle with Canini, though still managed to force a save out of Federico Marchetti.

Martinez was unlucky not to put the home side 2-1 up just past the hour mark, as he spun round in the box to crack a shot against the crossbar.

Late on Catania did get their goal, as a Taka Morimoto cross came in from the right fot Martinez's free header from six yards, as the Cagliari defence was caught out.
